Frenectomy

How does a short lingual frenum (i.e tongue tie) affect an older child…

  • speech

  • swallowing

  • chewing

  • development of the face

  • higher risk of obstructive sleep apnea

  • tongue thrust

  • malocclusion

  • vaulted palate

Did you know…

A short lingual frenum left untreated at birth is associated with OSA (obstructive sleep apnea) at a later age.

Assessment

Due to the nature of how a short lingual frenum can affect so many body processes, we assess the whole child… not just the 2 inch box of the mouth. On assessment day for a frenectomy, we do the following:

  • CBCT (3D radiograph)

    • send to a radiologist to interpret

  • Intra oral photos to capture the ties and occlusion

  • Postural photos

  • Impressions when necessary

  • Sleep Image when necessary

What type of frenectomy procedures do you offer?

We offer 2 types of releases— laser release and a functional frenuloplasty. When each is recommended is different and each provider in the office performs a different type of release. Call our office to get more information.

Who does the functional frenuloplasty?

We are lucky to have one of the very few affiliates of The Breathe Institute in our office— Dr. Tad Morgan. He comes to our office 1-2 times a month to do consultations and procedures.

His technique is precise and functional. He is able to get the cleanest revision and is guided by the patient’s myofunctional skills.

He works with not only the myofunctional therapists in his office, but also many therapists in the DFW area as well as across the country.

Call us if you would like a consultation with Dr. Morgan or click here to learn more about Dr. Morgan.
