My Why - We All Have a Purpose

We all have a why that pushes to do the things we do or gives purpose to our life. My why has become clearer and clearer throughout the last 4 years. It is my own flesh and blood. I would give anything for them- my why is my kids. They have driven me to stay healthy, choose less toxic home products, exercise, cook home cooked meals, take my vitamins, run barefoot in the backyard, take vacations to the beach, the list goes on and on.

After troubled breastfeeding issues with my daughter due to a tongue, lip, and buccal tie, one failed frenectomy, constant reflux, I chose to take a path to find answers. Once I found answers on how to get her on track, I wanted to know more. Once my eyes were opened to the “airway world,”, I began to notice that so many kids have “airway issues.”

What does this even mean? The tube that takes air from your nose to your lungs can be constricted or blocked. Things that could cause blockage or restricted flow would be tonsils, adenoids, enlarged turbinate, deviated septum, vaulted palate that constricts on nasal passages, a mandible or maxilla set back that impinges on the airway, ect.

Why does this even matter? Many kids are not able to breath properly. The basic life function that helps oxygenate our bodies is compromised. And when a kid cannot breathe especially during sleep, they cannot get into a deep sleep to repair and restore the body. Some say up to 70% of kids with ADHD/ADD has a sleep issue.

What other kinds of issues are kids having? Night terrors, bed wetting, tossing and turning, grinding, sleeping in awkward positions, mouth breathing, snoring, venous pooling under the eyes, behavioral issues during the day, ect. Many parents do not want to put their child on a medication that it itself causes sleep issues causing the need for something to help the child fall asleep at night.

So how does this tie in with my why? My daughter started having night terrors which disrupted the entire families sleep. One of us would have to sleep with her, and then we would not get any sleep as a result. But when I slept with her, it became apparent she was having more than just night terrors. She was mouth breathing, snoring, gasped for air, moved all over the bed, slept with her head cocked or bottom in the air. Mouth breathing alone is an indication that there is something deeper.  Snoring should be sending off every alarm bell in a parents’ head.

SHE is my WHY. She is the reason I continue on this path. The next day I started her in a device to chew on which has shown to help with proper growth and development of the jaws. I also did an at home screening device that shows me her heart rate, heart rate variability, snoring, sleep position, and best yet her sleep quality. And it proved to me that she is having some sort of upper airway issue which could be due to a number of different things. From day one she has pushed me down my career path and continues to push me. I have taken over 100 hours of CE each year to learn. I have gone to the best courses, learned from the best people, and been lucky to have shadowed the best doctors around the country. I will continue what I am doing because I see the need and understand that there are so many others on the path that my daughter is on. But the best part is that when they are young, it is easier to change their trajectory.

I look forward to serving you and your family as if they are my own. I won’t do anything that I would not do on my own child.
